The Algarve region is renowned for its fish dishes. With over 100 miles of coastline and a mild climate, this region is a rich breeding ground for a large variety of fish. It is one of the many Portuguese gastronomic paradises for those who enjoy seafood and fish. There is always a wide range of fresh fish dishes on most restaurant menus, including Choco’s com Tinta, Feijoada de Buzinas, Arroz de Peixe, fish stew, octopus rice, and sardines.

The most famous fish dish is bacalhau or salted cod. It is said that this fish can be cooked in 365 different ways. There are many recipe variations depending on region. Popular bacalhau dishes in the Algarve include Bacalhau no Forno, Bacalhau à Algarvia, Bacalhau Dourado, Bacalhau com Molho de Azeite, and Bacalhau com Piri-piri.

Bacalhau Tapas com Batatas is made with salted cod, potatoes, chili, onions, eggs, and olive oil. Bacalhau a Bras contains salted cod, eggs, potatoes, black olives, and parsley. Pastéis de bacalhau or bolinhos are fried and served cold before meals. Bacalhau Assado no Forno or baked codfish is prepared with salted codfish fillets, garlic, onions, tomatoes, olive oil, and white wine. Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá or codfish, potatoes and onion casserole is one of the most famous bacalhau recipes in the Algarve.

Another local recipe is Arroz de Peixe or fish rice. In order to prepare this dish, you must cook the fresh fish and rice with tomatoes and pepper and then add mint or coriander. Massada de Peixe is a real Algarvian classic. This recipe contains fish and pasta or rice. Bean stew with cuttlefish (Feijoada de Choco) and bean stew with whelks (Feijoada de Buzinas) are popular Algarvian dishes served in most restaurants.

Fish dishes in the Algarve include bread soup with shellfish, fish soups, clams bouillabaisse (Amêijoas na Cataplana), and dog-whelks with beans. Clams Bouillabaisse is one of the most famous local recipes. Imagine a pot of liquid gold broth sloshing with garlic, fennel, shallots, tomatoes, white wine, saffron, and sweet sea clams. This dish is sophisticated yet simple and casual.

Arroz com polvo (octopus rice) is a local favorite. The octopus is part of the Algarve cuisine. This recipe is usually made with fresh octopus, garlic, onions, green pepper, tomatoes, rice, piri piri, olive oil, and red wine. This is one of the many recipes in which the fish is deliciously prepared with the help of spices, herbs and other flavors.
