Margaret River olive oil isn't what one may expect from this part of Western Australia. Famous for its high quality wines, the region is also rich in agriculture. It is the South West's excellent climate which makes it ideal for growing grapes and also allows the Extra Virgin olive oil (EVOO) to be as good as the finest of the Mediterranean if not better. Without a shred of doubt, local EVOO is the best in Australia if not in the world.
Margaret River olive oil is mostly sold directly to retail outlets and restaurants but you can also find some at local farms, the majority of which are open for outsiders and allow free tastings. Some places even offer a range of items made from the oil, including body care products, soaps, chutneys, infused oils, beauty products and accessories. A few of these businesses have adjoining cafeterias where visitors can taste the best of local produce.
The following are a few experiences that are on offer:
Cellar door: Enjoy the freshness of local EVOO, pressed just hours after the harvest, at two local olive oil estates- 34 Degrees South and Wulura Farms.
Soap: Margaret River's Natural Olive Oil Soap Factory produces an array of soaps and beauty items made of EVOO. In case you or someone in your family suffers from eczema, dermatitis and other skin problems, you may consider using these all-natural, gentle soaps.
With Cafeteria: Olio Bello prides itself for mixing some of the best Extra Virgin oils with a range of products that include citrus pressed oils as well as oils infused with parmesan, chili and roasted garlic. There is also an on site cafe that combines their products with mouth watering food.
For those who wish to try out Margaret River olive oil from multiple producers should visit the IGA supermarket where they can pick up some of the finest local pressings right from the shelf. Moreover, you can also buy EVOO from pretty outlets such as Eagle Bay Olives at Eagle Bay or Petra in neighboring Dunsborough. Petra is an excellent place to see and offers delicious meals to go with an array of their world class produce. Buying direct from the Margaret River farmers is what I would do as the lower the food miles generally the better the product. Local farmers markets can be a great opportunity to meet many producers in one location, these are on every second and fourth Saturday of the month in Margaret River.
