Oil of oregano has been used as a traditional medicine by different tribes and ethnic groups for hundreds of years. The oil is extracted from the leaves of wild oregano which mainly thrives in Mediterranean regions. Greeks originally used the crushed leaves of oregano to heal skin wounds, cuts and burns. It was also frequently used as a food preservative. Englishmen used it to treat common respiratory problems such as cough and colds. Asians, especially Chinese healers, used oregano to relieve digestive problems. Today, medical science recognizes the therapeutic and medicinal effects of oregano oil.

As more and more people acknowledge oregano as a medicinal herb, manufacturers have decided to commercialize its oil. They usually mix or blend pure oil of oregano to another type of oil, usually extra-virgin olive oil. It is usually sold in pre-packaged bottles with different strengths and concentrations. Different products are available but herbalists highly recommend using Oreganol P73. Originally manufactured by North American Herb and Spice, this product is guaranteed to contain oil extracted from wild oregano which was not grown by using chemicals or fertilizers.

P73 means that it contains polyphenols to as much as 73 percent. These polyphenols are thought to be responsible for the healing and curative effects of oreganol. Manufacturers assure consumers that it is 3 times more concentrated than ordinary oregano oil.

Extensive research has shown that Oreganol P73 is antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-parasitic. It contains polyphenols such as carvacrol and thymol. Carvacrol is very effective in killing and inhibiting the growth of some strains of staphylococcus bacteria. Some herbalists say that oreganol is more effective than commonly prescribed antibiotics such as penicillin and streptomycin. Lab studies have shown that this product is also effective against some drug-resistant bacteria. Oil of oregano also contains natural antioxidants that fight free radicals which can damage the body’s cells.

Oreganol also helps to boost the body’s immune system. Herbalists recommend taking 2-4 drops per day. If you are accustomed to its taste, put the drops under the tongue and swallow it. You can also mix it with water or juice to make it more palatable. When taken internally, it can relieve a lot of illnesses such as colds, cough, allergies, and other respiratory problems. It helps to alleviate digestive problems such as bloating and diarrhea.

Oreganol P73 can be also used to treat skin problems. Apply directly on the affected part to treat athlete’s foot, swelling, irritation, wounds, burns, and fungal infections.
