Recently, many anxious parents have been turning to natural home remedies to treat their children for head lice as a safer alternative to over the counter and prescription based pesticide shampoos and creams. One of the most popular and easily accessible remedies is a head lice olive oil treatment.
Before we look at ways to effectively use this simple everyday product to remove lice you need to be aware of just exactly what sort of parasite we are dealing with.
Head lice are insects that are about the size of a sesame seed that live on the human scalp. In order for them to survive and thrive, they need just 2 things; warmth and tiny amounts of blood. They get both of these things from your head!
When they bite you to feed on your blood, their saliva leaves small deposits that can cause an allergic reaction on the surface of your scalp. This reaction appears as small raised and reddish areas of your skin that become extremely itchy.
Having an uncontrollable urge to keep scratching your head is usually one of the first and most obvious signs that you have indeed got lice.
But how can this be? My children have clean hair.
If you thought that only un-hygienic people and tramps got these annoying little beasts, then you’re not alone in believing this. Unfortunately that is not the case. Lice are not choosey about who they decide to set up home on.
Long hair or short hair. Dirty hair or clean hair. It makes no difference to a louse. All they want is a warm host on which to reside and to feed.
The way to get rid of lice for many years has been to use a medicated shampoo of some sort or a prescription chemically based pesticide. But over time these types of treatment have become less and less effective as the lice have built up a resistance to many of the components that they are made up of. Some of them have even been shown to have hazardous health threatening side effects.
While the chemically based products seem to be getting less effective, home based natural remedies still achieve fantastic results.
One of these simple home remedies is olive oil. It doesn’t need to be expensive first pressed virgin olive oil, in fact the cheaper more basic oils seem to work best.
The effective use of oil for getting rid of lice has actually been scientifically proven.
A study that was conducted by The Harvard School Of Public Health concluded:- “When lice were completely covered with olive oil for two hours they died of suffocation.”
How to correctly apply an olive oil lice treatment.
You need to apply this treatment properly in order to gain the best results. The key to applying the oil is to ensure that the hair is totally covered.
The easiest way to do this is to divide the hair into small sections of about 1 inch and carefully brush the oil through a section at a time.
When you are sure that the hair has been totally drenched in the olive oil you need to place a plastic wrap over the entire hair whilst trying not to let any air in. Leave this to work for at least 2 hours and then shampoo the hair.
Once shampooed you should comb the hair through with lice comb to remove the lice and any nits that may have been present.
To make sure you avoid a re-infestation, you need to repeat this treatment a few times over a 14 to 21 day period to make sure you have killed them all.
